Posture should be steady and comfortable.

This 4 week series, open to all practice levels, will physically focus on building body literacy, and flexible strength at the hips, while exploring, and creating wisdoms offered in the sutra shtira-sukham āsanam, posture should be steady and comfortable.
This sutra invites us to find effort and ease existing at the same time, while in postures. This month, along with the hip-centered movement, we will explore the role that ease in its many forms can play in keeping us steady and able to sustain effort. What does this feel like in asana, postures? And what does this look like off of our mat as we engage in, and choose for our communities? What does social justice look like, and how is it fueled when there is room made for ease in its different forms, such as release, joy, reconciliation, and rest? What power do we create for ourselves when we allow space for ease?

The hips are believed to store emotions, and the unresolved past. It is also believed that the the hips serve as the seat of our boundaries, and untapped creative power. We'll be exploring these subtle layers of the body as well in this series. These energies, along with ease and its forms can be tender and new places of exploration. This series as an all-access livestream for the month, brings us together in a brave and safe community to share and co-create new ideas and ways of leading with, and self-fueling with love.

Each week's focus and study are listed below:

  • Week 1: 5/4 - 5/7
    The Foundation: All-around focus on the hips and the pelvic floor, with an introduction to *shtira-sukham āsanam, flexible strength, and definitions of ease.

  • Week 2: 5/11 - 5/14
    Ease as Reconciliation: Focus on outer hips.

  • Week 3: 5/18 - 5/21
    Ease as Letting Go: Primary focus on the hamstrings, building into twists.

  • Week 4: 5/25 - 5/28
    Ease as Joy: Primary focus on external rotation, and inner thigh activation, with shoulder opening for a progressive build to Bird of Paradise.

Props are not required, but are recommended to have around just in case (blocks, or books, pillows or bolster, blanket or towel).

Classes will take place on Tuesdays & Fridays | 7:30am - 8:30am, EDT, starting Tuesday, May 4th, through Friday, May 28th. All classes will be made available for a 7-day replay.
Zoom information will be sent by the evening prior to class. At the start of each week, journaling prompts will be included (but are not mandatory) for continued self-study.
