This month's series is centered on exploring effort and ease through the shoulder girdle. This well-rounded focus on the actions of the shoulders will be used to guide students into various posture categories of yoga, from back-bending, to binds, through to the strength and mobility needed for inversions.
Building stability and strength in the shoulder girdle can improve overall spinal alignment and posture, and release stress and other tensions held in the shoulders.
Energetically, it is believed that we hold on to unfair expectations and self-doubt in the shoulders. Releasing these, can open space for self-confidence, self-advocacy, love and universal fellowship. This physical focus will be accompanied by a journey along the Liberation Channel of the Chakras, reinforcing intentions for the new year, and keeping us connected to momentum and possibility. The Liberation Channel of the Chakras (evolving energy centers) consists of the chakras located at the energetic heart, throat, third eye space between the eyebrows, and the crown of the head.
This exploration will guide us through personal definitions of liberation, and the intersection of those definitions and the dominating cultures of the broader collectives we are taking up space in. As we define liberation more clearly, we can see and choose the action needed to create it.
Each week's schedule and energetic focus is listed below:
Journaling prompts will be sent to all registrants at the start of each week.
Week 1: Tuesday, 1/5 & Friday, 1/8
Anahata (Heart Chakra): Physical focus on shoulder flexibility and strength, building to backbends. Energetic focus on self-love and loving kindness.
Week 2: Tuesday, 1/12 & Friday, 1/15
Vishuddha (Throat Chakra): Continued focus on flexibility and strength. Energetic focus on authenticity, advocacy, releasing of self-doubt and unfair expectations.
Week 3: Tuesday, 1/19 & Friday, 1/22
Ajna (Third Eye Chakra): Physical focus on mobility, and action of the shoulder blades to explore binds (my favorite!). Energetic focus on intuition, and examination of values, the moral compass, and personal definition(s) of liberation. This week's classes will include meditation.
Week 4: Tuesday, 1/26 & Friday, 1/29
Sahasrara (Crown Chakra): Physical focus on strength, stability, practicing neutral in the shoulders, and spinal alignment. Energetic focus on bringing liberation to the current moment and culture, versus a far away destination. This week will incorporate pranayama, meditation and build to Sirsasana A (Headstand), and/or its preparation.
Sequences will be curated to speak to the various layers of the body, from muscle and fascia to meridian lines and then chakras. While each class will be focused on the various actions of the shoulders, and benefits of shoulder opening and strengthening, classes will offer a full body experience before ending in Savasana (final rest).
Props are not required, but are recommended to have around just in case (blocks, or books, pillows or bolster, blanket or towel, strap or belt).
This is an open level series, open to all from beginners to advanced.
Journals are welcome to keep handy during practice.
Registration closes at 5pm, EST on Monday, January 4th, 2021
All recordings will be made available for the week for any missed practices, or desire to revisit a class.
